Site Description: Merlin-Works is the brainchild of Shana Merlin an improviser, teacher, and performer since 1996. In Shana's improvisation workshops at local theatres in Austin, Texas, everyone was having fun and becoming better improvisers, but something funny was happening. People were coming to her after class reporting how the workshop had improved other "unrelated" parts of their lives. A student would energize a board meeting at their company with an improv game from class. Another student would play a game with her husband to improve their communication. Yet another student said the workshop helped him ace a job interview, another one said it helped him close a sale. Then students started asking her to teach at their businesses, organizations, and schools, to spread her message of play, group creativity, and spontaneity. So in 2003, she started Merlin-Works, a company designed to offer improv to everyone who wanted it: performance training to improvisers; applied improv training to businesses and organizations; and improv comedy performances for audiences everywhere. In 2008, we opened the Merlin Works Institute for Improvisation, offering classes in shortform gameplay and narrative longform at the Salvage Vanguard Theater. |
